Artist Statement
"I like to work with perception, working in a way that
uses the semi conscious part of your mind to paint with. It's
a whole other type of consciousness. A painting consciousness
you couldn't handle with words. It gives me a sense of incredible
contact with myself. That was the thing I could hold onto,
that's what helped me to become a painter. I used to paint
portraits but I felt too confined by realism. I've always
loved the abstract genre. The internal contact with abstract
was so strong that I just followed it. I think that the reality
I make is as real as anything else. My paintings and style
have now fleshed out into full abstraction, dealing with personal
issues pertaining to us all. I believe the viewer can extract
a limitless amount of varied meanings and interpretations
from my work, and that is the power of art. I believe it requires
not only the artist but also the viewer to reach its full
message. Sometimes my paintings incorporate all the angst
of youth enduring oppression from being brought up with a
" Children should be seen and not heard" philosophy
and boarding school. I have always possessed a fiercely independent
temperament, I like to challenge tradition, I paint continuously,
I don't allow intimidation and I'm a born storyteller. My
art is influenced by Man Ray, Klee, Van Gogh, Wagner, Dumas
and Dore among others. It all boils down to, I paint pictures
that I would like to see."
